Baby Sling Safety

  1. Ensure adequate breathing

Preventing proper air flow to the baby may cause suffocation and/or death. Check your baby frequently while wearing your sling to ensure proper positioning and keep objects and material away from baby’s face to ensure a clear source of air. Be careful not to allow your newborn's chin to rest on his or her chest as it can restrict breathing. Make sure your newborn baby is laying flat in the sling or pouch, or put a small pillow or folded receiving blanket under baby's neck to keep chin off chest. Do not wear a newborn on your back.

  1. Avoid all hazardous activities

Do not carry your baby in a sling while doing any of the following activites: cooking, running, bicycling, jumping, being close to or working with fire or chemicals, eating or drinking hot foods and beverages. Do not participate in any kind of sports while carrying your baby in a sling. The sling is not a substitute for a government approved carseat or a bicycle seat. Under no circumstances should you carry your baby in a sling in a car or on a bicycle. Do not drive any kind of motorized vehicle while wearing your baby in the sling. Do not bend from the waist down when wearing your baby in a sling. Always bend from the knees to keep your baby in a stable position. Be careful when turning corners or walking through narrow spaces. Always hold onto your child when bending over or moving quickly, you do not want him or her falling out of the sling or pouch. Be aware of potentially dangerous objects being within reach of your baby or toddler's hands. Do not put any objects into the sling except your baby and, as needed, a support pillow or blanket.

  1. Use the recommended positions for your baby's age and development

  • Newborns: Cradle carry with support pillow as needed

  • Child must face towards you until he or she can hold head upright (about 4 to 5 months old).

  • Babies who can hold their head up: Front Carry, Cuddle Carry, Hip Carry

  • Babies heavier than 6 kg should be carried in the Hip Carry

  • Use the sling only on babies up to 12 kg.

  1. Use the sling only if your own health allows it

Your sling is intended for use by adults with no health issues to carry babies. Adults suffering from back, shoulder, and/or neck pain should not use the sling. Mothers should speak with their physician about when it is safe to use a sling after a Caesarian birth.

  1. Use common sense

Be aware that the bumbaumel sling, like all brands of slings and pouches, has no straps holding your baby in. Your baby can climb or fall out. Do not use the sling or pouch with an uncooperative child. Until you are very comfortable using the sling or pouch, always keep one hand on your child for safety.

Change shoulders periodically when you are wearing the sling or pouch for long periods of time. Before each use make sure that the fabric and seams are in good condition. If there are areas that look worn or frayed do not use it. If it is not in good condition we can no longer assure the integrity of the sling or pouch.
